Public lecture on ‘Nostalgia & Architecture’

Frances H Mikuriya will discuss the notion of nostalgia, tracing back to the first appearance of the term defined by the Swiss doctor Johannes Hofer in 1688.

Frances H Mikuriya will discuss the notion of nostalgia, tracing back to the first appearance of the term defined by the Swiss doctor Johannes Hofer in 1688. This term has transformed from the 17th century as an illness and disease of ‘homesickness’ to a generalisation of a yearning of the past in the 20th century. The lecture will focus on the phenomenon of the ‘architecture of nostalgia’ by looking at the widespread rejection of Modernism and how it triggered the need to recreate comforting zones which remind people of the past- to a more secure time and place even if this past is fictitious.
